ADVISORY/AGL Resources Demonstrates New LNG Technology
WHAT: National demonstration/test results of new LNG storage
technology
WHEN: Noon, Monday, April 19
WHERE: AGL Resources' Cherokee Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)
Plant near Canton, Georgia.
WHO: Representatives of the U.S. Department of Energy;
Conversion Gas Imports LP, which developed the
technology; and AGL Resources and 25 other sponsoring
companies.
DETAILS: The U.S. Department of Energy is testing a new heat
exchanger technology to increase the efficiencies of LNG transport and
storage. The United States is increasing its imports of LNG due to
diminished supplies of natural gas. This makes it important to find
new ways to increase efficiencies and reduce the costs of LNG
operations. The Bishop Process developed by Conversion Gas Imports LP,
turns liquefied natural gas (LNG) back into its gaseous state as it is
off-loaded from tanker ships. The gas then can be pumped directly to
pipelines or stored in salt caverns, eliminating the need for costly
above-ground tanks.
The U.S. government's first field trial of the patented heat
exchanger was conducted at AGL Resources' LNG facility in Cherokee
County. Bill Bishop and Mike McCall of Conversion Gas Imports will
discuss the test results during the lunch meeting.
"The Bishop Process, if proven successful, has the potential to
significantly increase world LNG trade and provide a highly secure,
economical and flexible way to expand LNG imports and augment the
nation's energy supply," Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham said in
July.
